Don’t know if you have installed Registax on a new computer 3 years since you published this article. I have a Windows 7 and a Windows 10 machine and Registax would hang at the Align step on both. I tried reducing the number of align points and reducing the number of images to no avail. My machines’ specs are pretty powerful, core i7, 16GB RAM. OaCapture is a planetary imaging application for Linux and MacOS. It currently supports cameras such as the ZWO ASI series, many of the USB Imaging Source cameras, firewire cameras, some of the QHY models, most of the Celestron cameras, Point Grey USB (and GigE, where the libraries are available) models, some Starlight Xpress models, and some Touptek models. Dec 05, 2016 RegiStax is a free image processing software for amateur astrophotographers, released as freeware, which runs under Windows. A compatible version for Mac OS is also available as a emu file (see Download below) Its purpose is to produce enhanced images of astronomic observations through combining. A comment by Joe Zawodny: 'I have not seen a case where RegiStax produced a better image, at best it was just as good, but often AVI Stack’s result was superior (especially when it came to the uniformity of quality).' Introduction
AviStack was primarily developed to process lunar images, but, it also works well with solar and planetary images. AviStack uses hundreds or even thousands of reference points to compensate for seeing-related distortions most effectively. This is decisive to detect even the smallest details in high resolution lunar images.
Despite the large number of reference points, AviStack is noticeably faster than Registax (when large numbers of reference points are used) and enables complete batch processing for all time consuming processing steps. Simply prepare within minutes all settings necessary to stack the film, save those settings and start the batch processing. That way you will later, e.g. on the next morning, find all the stacked final images on you computer.
You can already find in the Internet (and here under Bilder / Images) a number of examples where results obtained with AviStack are compared to those of Registax. A comment by Joe Zawodny: 'I have not seen a case where RegiStax produced a better image, at bestit was just as good, but often AVI Stack’s result was superior(especially when it came to the uniformity of quality).'
Program versions
AviStack comes in two versions:
- A stand alone .exe file for 32bit Windows systems.
- An IDL save file.
run on all systems.
If you have already installed the stand alone version of AviStack and an update is available, you can simply download the IDL save file and replace the one already present in the AviStack program directory.
Supported AVI-Codecs
AviStacksupports AVIs recorded with the Y800-codec (uncompressed grey scale),DIB-codec (uncompressed color) and I420/IYUV-codec (webcams). I.e. allgrey scale and color films recorded with the cameras of The Imaging Source as well as films taken with the Philips ToUCams.
Additionally,it is possible to process series of images of the following formats:PNG, JPG, BMP, TIFF, JP2 (also 16 bit). That way basically every typeof AVI can be used if it is split up into single frames beforehand.

AutoStakkert! is Windows only software. However, it does run fine using Wine under both Linux and macOS. As of yet there are no plans to make native versions for either of these operating systems.
